The finissage of the exhibition WANDGEGUNDEN will take place on Sunday, 12th February 2023 at 3 p.m. in the temporary building of the Skulpturenmuseum at Georg-Herwegh-Straße 63-67. The three exhibition spaces can be experienced one last time with the site-specific art - each with two murals that transform the space and call for attention. After the end of the exhibition, the walls are painted over, the works of art disappear and live on only in the minds of the museum public. For this reason, a documentary catalog for the exhibition was created, which will be presented on 12th February 2023 by the two curators Georg Elben and Sebastian Freytag.

In order to reveal the origin of the content of the exhibition, Dr. Friederike Schuler will give a lecture on wall-bound art in the service of the community. Using numerous image examples, the speaker presents the special features of mural painting from the Weimar Republic and asks about its connections to this art genre in the Federal Republic with a focus on North Rhine-Westphalia from the 1950s to 1970s. How did the idea of community-forming and artworks continue and what status was assigned to art in public space and especially to public murals?

Dr. Friederike Schuler is a freelance art historian and curator and did her doctorate in 2013 on mural painting in the Weimar Republic. Since then she has been researching building-related art as well as art and institutional history of the post-war period in Germany, most recently together with Sebastian Freytag on art in architecture in NRW.

There will then be a final curator's tour of the exhibition. The artists will be present.
