The Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl will end its activities at the familiar museum space with the final project (BLACKOUT) by Mischa Kuball at the turn of the year 2021/2022 before leaving the Town Hall in the beginning of 2022. According to the current schedule, we will be able to move into a new location in Marschall 66 in 2024. By then, the building that was originally built in the 1960s together with the city library and is located around 500 meters from the museums current location will be fully rebuilt.

The architectural peculiarity of the old "glass box" on Creiler Platz lies in the history of its creation, because the museum, founded in 1982, was not included in the plans of the Rotterdam architects, but was set up in the 1980s in an inventive and solution-oriented manner next to the striking open staircase as well as in the basement. The ground floor, previously a free space under the council chambers, was enclosed with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall almost 40 years ago, so that the public can look into the museum from all sides, which is particularly impressive in the dark thanks to the appropriate lighting: With the construction the term glass box (Glaskasten) evolved quickly.

These ground-level exhibition rooms, whose open atmosphere is reinforced by the same exposed aggregate concrete floor inside and outside, have a very distinctive character, and it is a particular loss that was most lamented in the discussion about moving out of the museum. This is exactly where Kuball's concept of intervention with white light comes in: The special thing about the architecture, in which the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten was at home for 40 years, is to be celebrated once again and artistically emphasized. Some of the sculptures from the museum's collection selected by the artist can be seen during daylight in a white cube framed in white fabric and in the dark those objects cast shadows that are visible from the outside: for two months, a slowly pulsating light emanating from both towers and the Glaskasten ath the same time will be visible from afar and shine into the night. For the last time on 9th January 2022, after that the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl in the Marl Town Hall will be history.
